The Zulfiqar Sword

The Zulfiqar was one of the swords of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the pommel of the sword was made of silver, and this was the most famous of his swords. It also spelled Dhulfaghar, Zolfaaghar, Dhu al-Fiqar, Dhu l-faqar, Thulfeqar, Dhulfiqar, Zoulfika or Z├╝lfikar, is a more or less mystical sword connected to the Prophet Mohammad and his son-in-law and cousin Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib. Zulfiqar is an arabic word which means “cleaver of spine”. It was the only sword of that time which had double edges. It was historically frequently depicted as a scissor-like double bladed sword on Muslim flags.

There are different perceptions about the arrival of Zulfiqar. Some think that in the battle of Badr Hazrat Muhammad PBUH broke a branch of tree and with the miracle the branch was transformed into Zulfiqar.

While other think that during the battle of Trench, when Muslims were just 3,000 in number had to fight Abu Sufyan, who was in the much higher strength of 10,000. At that time Muhammad Prophet (PBUH) prayed to Allah for help, and that was the time, Allah sent Archangel Gabriel (Jibril) towards Muhammad Prophet (PBUH) who gave him Zulfiqar sword, then it was given to Ali (RA).

Ali used it so effectively that (later) a well-known saying came up: "There is no hero and man like Ali; There is no sword like zulfiqar". This is often found as a kind of talismanic inscription, e.g. on sword blades. It has been verified that after passing of Ali (RA) this sword was given to Hassan (RA), elder son of Ali (RA) then after his martyrdom, it was passed to Hussain (RA), his younger son. And then in Karbala, Hussain (RA) used it to fight the Yazid’s Army.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) kept a total of 9 swords, 8 of them are kept in Topkapi museum of Turkey and in Cairo, Egypt. But Zulfiqar can not be found anywhere.

Some of Muslims believe that after the death of Hussain (RA) it was passed to his sons and later Imam Mehdi, will have it or as per some Muslims, it was returned back to Allah.
