Mysterious Unidentified Flying Object Spotted Over Japan's Sky

On June 2020, television footage taken in the northeastern city of Sendai showed an unidentified object looked like a large white, unmanned balloon attached to two crossed propellers. Officials in the Sendai Weather Bureau said it had appeared near dawn and hung in the sky for hours, largely unmoving, until obscured by clouds. The origin of a strange, balloon-like UFO that appeared in the sky over the city of Sendai, Japan, yon June 17 around 7 a.m. local time, remains a mystery a full day after its sudden arrival.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency’s office confirmed that it was not flown by the agency and neither local government nor local self- defense forces knew what the object was.

"The object looks like a balloon for monitoring weather, but it's not ours," an official at the Sendai bureau of the Japan Meteorological Agency told AFP on Thursday.

Local police reportedly flew a helicopter to confirm the presence of the object, but also drew a blank on its identity - even after consulting other authorities and organisations.

Kyushu University's aeronautics department publicly denied the device belonged to them, after public speculation.

The mysterious object received coverage nationwide, and even prompted a question to the top government spokesman at his daily briefing. Mr Yoshihide Suga said the government was aware of the unidentified object, but batted away suggestions that it might be the work of foreign governments or be capable of causing damage.

The mystery may remain unresolved - the object has reportedly floated out to the Pacific, where the authorities have lost track of it.
